July 10, 2014:
I, ざっちー [Zatchy], made my first appearance on Japanese television. The show is called ビーバップ！ハイヒール [BE-BOP! HIGH HEEL] broadcasted on AsahiTV.
It’s no secret, TV production moves fast. I had an interview on a Monday, got a call Tuesday night requesting my assistance for shooting the following Wednesday night. A three day swoop. I was gonna be participating in a 合コン [GouKon]-like mingle with three other foreign men and four Japanese women. They asked a few more favors of me: learn how to do magic, bring your juggling gear and guitar, and write an original love song (ロケット・ラブ). I had school and work on shooting day, so you can imagine my stress levels shot through the roof. Didn’t have much time for sleep that night. But I got it all done. (All of which got cut from the actual show… 笑)
As for the persona they wanted me to betray: the typical white foreigner. They asked me to wear a Kanji T-shirt, which, being one of the few regular foreign guys in this country, I did not have. Every other dude participating was in cool-guy get-up and I was T-shirt guy. I was provided with a shirt that read, “F**k Tokyo I ❤ Osaka”. And they made sure the obscenity was visible.
We shot for a solid three plus hours and I got a decent amount of airtime for the shaved down ten minute segment divided amongst eight people.
I ended up watching the show with all my housemates, including my Japanese lady-stories. It was a little bizarre watching myself with everyone, especially with lady-stories since it was a show about me flirting with other girls. haha. I got blown-up with texts as it aired from all sorts of people. Even ones I barely talk to, or have met once.
Overall, it turned out pretty cool. I hope to continue making my way into the Japanese Television world. Remember, ざっちーでええんちゃうん！
